Surrey Japanese Society

As the secretary and founding committee member of the Surrey Japanese Society, I have designed a number of Facebook banners and event posters, as well as the committee hoodie. Besides that, I planned, filmed and edited the promotional video for the upcoming academic year.

Banner Design

These banners are the society's Facebook page cover. For the banner of 2017(bottom), I was responsible for both its design and the committee photos. I went for a white-red colour scheme to echo with the national flag, and used a light font to resonate with the Japanese design philosophy - Simplicity. Whereas the banner of 2018(top), I had a rather different approach, with a bright coloured and polygon design, intended to portray a fresh new look for the society for the new academic year.

Poster Design

The Society poster(left) was designed with the look of Japanese poster, as a way to introduce society to the students. I also took the campus building photo, which added a professional feel to it. Meanwhile, I used a neon light text and added smoke filter for the Asian Night poster(right), to create the clubbing vibe, as the society was co-hosting a clubbing event with other asian societies.

Hoodie Design

These are the different designs I came up for committee hoodie. For all three designs, I tried to create a visual appealing composition of the society's name in Japanese. The variations in size and position for each alphabet give the hoodie a young and energetic look. As a society, we decided to go for the design in burgundy(left).

Promotional Video

I was in charge of this project from the initial concept to postproduction. A detailed shot list and professional storyboard were made before the filming, to ensure the quality of promotional video is up to the committee's standard.

Working as a team, I was able to direct and film the video successfully on the day as planned. It was cut into a fast and punchy 30seconds video that builds a connection between the society and the students, and bring the message "language connects all" across.
